Villar aims to lift Philippines from poverty - Inquirer.net

The family patriarch was a government employee, and Villar says they were so cash-strapped that one sick brother died because the family did not have the means to pay for hospital treatment.

According to Villar, he put himself through school, eventually earning a degree in accountancy and later a masters in business administration at the state-run University of the Philippines.

Villar then tried his hand at various jobs, but subsequently decided to go it alone, convinced the only way to get rich was to become an entrepreneur.
