UP group questions poll body - Manila Bulletin

A women's group at the University of the Philippines (UP) Thursday assailed the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for insisting that it has prepared for clean and honest elections and refusing to restore the security features of the counting machines to be used in the May 10 polls.

The Watch Out When Women Vote (WOWW VOTE) said Comelec Chairman Jose Melo should be sanctioned for rejecting suggestions by a number of groups concerned about the possibility of computerized electoral fraud on a national scale.

It said that warnings about the flash cards' breaking down were issued by NBN-ZTE whistle blower Jun Lozada and Halalang Marangal leader Obet Verzola two months ago but Melo allegedly did not heed their counsel.

Computer expert Dante Mara also called for the installation of firewalls on the source code to be used to insulate it from attack more than six months ago, but to no avail.
