The incoming University Student Council (USC) is split between two major parties in Diliman, with Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights in UP (STAND-UP) claiming the positions of chair, vice-chair, and five out of 12 councilors, while a plurality of the elected college representatives hailed from Alyansa ng Mga Mag-aaral para sa Panlipunang Katwiran at Kaunlaran (ALYANSA).
STAND-UP regains the leadership of UP’s highest student body after the top post went to Alyansa in AY 2008-2009 and Nagkakaisang Iskolar para sa Pamantasan at Sambayanan (KAISA) for this academic year.
STAND-UP standard bearer psychology major Rainier Astin “Rain” Sindayen will serve as the next chair of the USC starting this June, having garnered 3,091 votes. He won by a margin of a little over 100 votes against Jose Gabriel “Beng” Villamil of KAISA., who gained 2,972 votes. ALYANSA chairperson candidate Mario Cerilles came in a close third with 2,923 votes.
